There he sits all day, in the mandai in Pune on his stall like so many other paanwals beside him. He arranges and re arranges his paans (betel leafs) quite oblivious to the occassional photographer who might be drawn in by his mien, or his newly washed verdant wares, that shine so bright and glossy. The betel leaf is chewed by many Indians though it is not a practice that is followed much by the upper class educated Indian. The betel leaf is also used for some Puja (prayer)ceremonies. It is considered to have many healing and medicinal properties though a large number of betel leaf eaters perhaps cancel those out as they chew it with tobacco.

This picture was taken at the newly opened butterfly park in Pune, Western India. From June to September this part of India is among those that receive the south west monsoon, and the butterflies are seen in plenty at this time. This particular butterfly is called a common crow or common Indian crow and is sitting on a lantana flower. Lantana is one of the favourite nectar yielding flowers for butterflies and they are often found around them. in india lanata are grown as hedges or found in the wild.

Mulshi! How beautiful, even now I close my eyes and imagine myself upon the veranda of a starnger's home. How perfectly designed to have year long views of the lake and the mountains and seasonal views of the waterfalls tumbling down the mountainsides to the right. The mountains in the mist and couds add to the feeling of unreal beauty. Cool pleasant monsoon breezes and light rain on the face add to the pleasure of it all. A place one leaves very reluctantly wishing to visit again soon very soon. Unmown grass mixed with wildflowers invites a person to savour a walk, enjoying the flora, the butterflies half hidden within wildflowers. The very smell is freah and rejuvenating to the soul and behind it all, looms a thickly forested peak where panthers roam wild and all just 50 kms away from the city of Pune.

When at a level crossing what can one do but wander around with the camera taking random shots. The goods trains simply go on forever in India, i dont know if it is the same elsewhere.... Actually I rather liked the level crossings in this town it is Deolali near Nashik in the western indian State of Maharashtra, they were all freshly painted and very neat yet with a rather quiet and rural atmosphere.

Had been to this dreamy place in the mountains close by to Pune with some friends. The farm belonged to their cousin and though it was raining I could not sit inside but wandered around this beautiful place with my camera. The garden was not perfect and yet so beautiful, as only a cared for garden that has been allowed to run a bit wild can be. Though our host was absent and I never met him. everything around reflected the work and taste of a person whose soul is united with nature. I hope I can repeat this visit this monsoon because the monsoon is the best part of the year in my state of Maharashtra when the entire world comes under a green mantle.

Nothing really special about this vegetable seller except that in India one is under the misconception that most poor people are illiterate, but whe I wander around the market especially in the afternoons when business is slow I see this more and more. hawker and peddlers reading the papers, it is true that they are not very fluent in english but then literacy is not about being able to read or write in English but just read and write in any language. This is a market in Pune Maharashtra and the man is reading the paper in the local language marathi.
